Restorative Justice Week 2024
Every year, the 3rd week of November marks international Restorative Justice Week, this year from November 17th to November 23rd!
Restorative Justice is a practice that aims to support victims and offenders of crime by offering them the opportunity to have a mediated meeting, where a trained mediator facilitates a discussion between the victim and offender with the aim of addressing and repairing the harm caused.
Dublin’s North Inner City is lucky to have a number of massive advocates for Restorative Justice, including from An Garda Síochána, National College of Ireland, Belvedere Youth Club, the NEIC Project, Barnardos, and the Community Action Network, and there are a range of events to mark Restorative Justice Week, starting with a talk from Stephen Bradley, manager of Shamrock Rovers, “Sport as a Connector”, on how sport and football can bring people together.
In restorative justice, victims are given a chance to ask questions and to make the offender aware of the effect of their actions. The chance to receive an apology for the victim and gain forgiveness for the offender can have beneficial effects on both parties. [1]
The theme for this year is “The promise of restorative justice in a polarising world”.
